If You’re Looking For Someone To Build You A New Website Or
Overhaul Your Existing Site, You Need To Know This:

10 Questions To Ask A New Web Developer Before You Let Them Anywhere Near Your Website

So you need to choose a company to do some work on your website?

That’s a huge burden of responsibility on YOUR shoulders.

Get it right and you’ll have a sleek looking site that:

reflects your brand perfectly,

supports the efficient operation of your business processes,

is a magnet to prospective buyers because the search engines LOVE your site,

and ultimately generates more leads and makes more sales for your business.

However, get it wrong and it’s a completely different story:

❌  you end up with a clunky website that’s difficult to navigate so visitors quickly leave,

❌  bug-ridden code makes it high maintenance and costly to fix,

❌  Google doesn’t even know your site exists so you never appear in the search results,

❌  the site isn’t integrated with your other systems so any customers who do stumble across it experience delays and difficulties making your business look unprofessional which damages your reputation,

❌  your site doesn’t make you any more sales and may even start costing you money,

❌ and to cap it all, the cheap and cheerful developer you hired from the freelancing site stops returning your emails leaving you helpless, frustrated and angry.

And you know who’ll get the blame don’t you?

But someone has to do it, and for your business it looks like that’s you.

So how do you pick the right web development company to build you the website you need?

With so many digital agencies to choose from, let me help you.

How?

Well, I’m going to give you a little industry insider knowledge to help you sort the good guys from the not so good.

Choosing someone to work on your website should be an easy decision to make.

Here’s how…

There are 10 questions you should ask every digital agency that pitches you to build your website.

I’ll lay them out here and I’ll also give you the model answers to help you weed out any unsuitable candidates so you can narrow down your shortlist.

So here are the questions:

Question #1 – What is your process for working with clients to gather requirements and ensure that our needs are met?

Question #2 – How do you approach website design and development?

Question #3 – How do you ensure the website is responsive and mobile-friendly?

Question #4 – How do you ensure that the website will be optimised for search engines?

Question #5 – How do you approach website security and protection against hacking and other cyber threats?

Question #6 – How do you ensure the website is accessible to visitors?

Question #7 – How do you test and validate the website before launch?

Question #8 – What is your process for troubleshooting and addressing issues post-launch?

Question #9 – What kind of support and maintenance do you offer after the website is launched?

Question #10 – Can you provide examples of similar websites you have built for other clients in the past?

Question #1 – What is your process for working with clients to gather requirements and ensure that our needs are met?

This is probably the most important question you should ask a prospective web development company.  How they answer this will give you

a very good idea of how successful your website project will be.

What you are looking for with this question is how much groundwork they do before they even begin writing any code.

Preparation and planning are the key to gathering your requirements and ensuring your needs are met with the website they design and

build for you.  This will be evident in how they answer this question.

Here at the Online Marketing Surgery, here’s how we do it.  We take you through these specific steps:

STEP 1  – Discovery:  This consists of a series of meetings so we can: 1

    1. 1 Understand your business, your goals and your target audience.
    1. 2 If you have one, we’ll do a review and a technical audit of your existing website.
    1. 3 We’ll then establish your website needs, preferences, and any specific technical requirements you have.

STEP 2 – Research:   We research your industry and your competitors to gain a deeper understanding of the environment you operate

in, your needs and the best practices in your field.

STEP 3 – Planning:   We then create an overall project plan that outlines your goals, your objectives, and the deliverables we will produce

for the website.   Together we identify any potential issues or challenges that may need to be addressed during the project and plan for

them accordingly. This is called a scoping document.

STEP 4 – Design:   We begin the actual website work by first creating a design concept that meets your needs and aligns with your brand

and target audience.   We map out your business processes and ensure the right data gets sent to the right place at the right time.

You’ll get to see mockups and wireframes of the website design so you can give your feedback and we can make the necessary revisions

until you approve the final design.

STEP 5 – Development:   Once you’ve approved the design, we then build and develop your new website.  We call it “development

because as we test and validate the build, we usually have to make minor tweaks to the design to overcome unexpected process

challenges or technical difficulties.

Throughout the build, your new site is thoroughly tested and validated and you’re kept informed and involved at every stage.

STEP 6 – Launch  When the build is finished, there is a full functional test before it is finally launched and opened to visitors.  We

continue to monitor it closely immediately after launch to make sure everything works as it should.

STEP 7 – Maintenance:   The support we give you during the project doesn’t end when the site goes live.  We also actively maintain and

fix any bugs that arise for 60 days after it has launched to give you the confidence you have a working site.  After that we have very

reasonable maintenance packages to ensure your site continues to do the job.  These are highly recommended to keep your site

updated with current plugins and software configurations and to continue to protect you against new security threats.

A lot goes on through this process and we’ve identified the most important factor that makes this a success.  It’s this:

Clear & Regular Communication

Throughout the entire process, you get regular updates from us about the progress of the design, development and build so you are always

kept up to date.

It’s just one of the many things our clients love about working with us.

Question #2 – How do you approach website design and development?

The answer to this question separates serious website developers from wannabe web designers.

It’s the difference between getting a fully functional business website and a site that’s little more than an online brochure.

What you are looking for in a developer is a systematic, business focused approach that creates a site that does look good, but also does

the job it needs to.

The starting place for that is the platform they use.

Over the last few years there has been an explosion of easy to use business website building platforms such as Wix, Squarespace and

Shopify.

For a small business that wants to get online, these are a convenient and easy way to build their first website.

But there’s a catch…

The problem with a website built like this is you are limited by the templates available.  As your business grows it becomes more and more

likely you’ll need complicated and expensive customisation to update your site.

Here’s how we get around that problem at the Online Marketing Surgery.

We use the same platform used by these well known brands:

  • Playstation
  • Microsoft News
  • Vogue
  • Sony Music
  • The White House
  • Time Magazine
  • Skype
  • Yelp
  • The Rolling Stones
  • New York Times Co
  • BBC America
  • Walt Disney
  • Evernote
  • Wired Magazine
  • The Observer

It’s called WordPress and is the most capable, comprehensive, flexible and supported online content management system available.

We’ve built thousands of successful sites using WordPress.

Now you know the platform we use, here are the steps we take to design and develop your site once we’ve understood your requirements.

  1. 1 The architecture of your existing business software systems are mapped out
  1. 2 The business processes for the completed site are defined.
  1. 3 A website design is drawn up that interfaces with your existing architecture to deliver the processes you want.
  1. 4 We build the site from that design using WordPress.
  1. 5 Where necessary, we use custom code to integrate different systems and to provide the bespoke functionality you need.
  1. 6 We map out the data flows so you can be confident you’re compliant with GDPR regulations.

Question #3 – How do you ensure the website is responsive and mobile-friendly?

Why is this such an important question?

According to various research studies carried out in 2021, mobile devices account for a significant portion of internet traffic. Here are a few

statistics from that research:

  • Mobile devices accounted for 52.6% of all website traffic worldwide, with desktops accounting for the remaining 47.4%.
  • The average person spends 3 hours 15 minutes per day on their mobile device, and that number is expected to increase in the future.
  • Google has reported that more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in more than 10 countries including the United States and Japan.

  • Mobile e-commerce sales accounted for 69% of total e-commerce sales worldwide.
  • Mobile apps accounted for 89% of mobile media time, with the remaining 11% spent on the mobile web.

That’s why it is important that your website is responsive and mobile friendly.

Any good web developer worth their salt as a minimum draw on one or more of these techniques depending on the design of the site.

[JARGON ALERT!] Beware, the following list is jargon heavy and I share it so you can appreciate the technical skills necessary to make your

site mobile friendly.  A competent web developer will:

📱Use CSS media queries to apply different styles based on the screen size of the device.

📱Use a responsive grid system to create a flexible layout that adapts to different screen sizes.

📱Use images and other resources that are optimised for smaller screens and slower internet connections.

📱Test the website on a variety of devices and browsers to ensure it looks and works well across different platforms.

📱Avoid using Flash and other technologies that are not compatible with mobile devices.

📱Using correct meta tags and viewport settings to control how the website is scaled on mobile devices.

Here at the Online Marketing Surgery we ensure all our sites are mobile friendly using some or all of these techniques.

In fact it is so important to us that we test every site we create on EVERY mobile device you can imagine, even if they’re no longer being

sold!

How do we do that?

Well that’s the benefit of the web development expertise, specialist knowledge and tools we have at our disposal.

Question #4 – How do you ensure that the website will be optimised for search engines?

This is a great question and is important for this reason:

If your site is NOT search engine optimised, then it will NOT rank highly in the Google search results.  That means it might as well be

invisible for the number of visitors you’ll get.

So it is important that your site looks good to Google.

But…

Here’s the big mistake many businesses make when they commission someone to build or update their site:

They leave the Search Engine Optimisation until AFTER the site is built.

Whilst it’s not too late to fix, it adds additional time and cost to a project and just delays the arrival of money-spending visitors to your site.

Another mistake to avoid is this:  engaging a web designer who doesn’t know enough about search engine optimisation.  It’s more common

than you might think.

That’s why I dedicate a whole section to it in our free Website Performance Report.  You can download it at the bottom of this page.

So what should you look for in a prospective web developer?

Here at The Online Marketing Surgery, we have search engine optimisation on our agenda from the very first moment we start talking to

you about your business and what you want from your website.

[SIDE NOTE – We think this is such an important issue, that we’ve possibly even over compensated for this.  Our lead Web Designer, Andy

Timmins understands SEO so much that he even talks about it at SEO conferences!]

Site design goes hand in hand with search engine optimisation at every stage of the website development process.

Our SEO and PPC teams provide keyword and page tag information to the designer when individual pages are planned.

Then once the designer has built the site, the SEO and PPC teams come back in and check the initial search engine optimisation before it

goes live.

Once it is live those teams then take over to do their necessary tweaks to improve search engine rankings and conversion from any pay per

click advertising carried out.

Question #5 – How do you approach website security and protection against hacking and other cyber threats?

The cyber threat to small businesses is increasing every day.  It would be foolish to think that if you are a small business that you won’t be

targeted.

According to a report by Cybersecurity Ventures, small and medium sized businesses are targeted in 43% of all cyber attacks.   The

frequency of these attacks has been increasing year-over-year.

That is why this question is so relevant when you are looking for a web developer to build your website.

Here are just some of the many threats you are facing:

☠️  Injection of malicious code into your site’s database giving them potential access to that data.

☠️  Placement of malicious code on your website that is executed by unsuspecting visitors to your site.

☠️  An attacker can trick a visitor to your website into performing actions they did not intend, such as making a purchase or changing their password.

☠️  Your website can be flooded with large amounts of traffic to make it unavailable to legitimate users.  This is called a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks

☠️  An attacker can exploit vulnerabilities in a website’s file structure to gain unauthorised access to sensitive files and data.

☠️  An attacker can use social engineering tactics to trick users into giving away sensitive information such as login credentials or financial information.

☠️  An attacker can infect a website with malware, which can be used to steal sensitive data or launch further attacks.

☠️   An attacker intercepts communications between a user and a website to steal sensitive information.

☠️  An attacker attempts to guess a user’s password by repeatedly trying different combinations of characters.

So how does a good web developer increase the protection against threats like these?

Firstly, it’s important for them to stay informed about the latest security threats and take steps to protect the websites they build.

They do this by implementing a variety of measures to protect against hacking and other cyber threats. Here are a few steps you should

expect them to take to improve website security:

✅  Keep software up to date: They use the latest versions of web development frameworks, content management systems, and other software to ensure that known vulnerabilities are patched.

✅  Secure coding practices: They follow established security guidelines and best practices when writing code to prevent common vulnerabilities such as SQL injection and cross-site scripting (XSS).

✅  Implement authentication and access controls: They use secure authentication methods and restrict access to sensitive areas of the website to authorised users only.

✅  Use encryption: They use HTTPS and SSL certificates to encrypt data in transit and at rest and to protect against eavesdropping and data theft. (That’s the padlock you’ll see in the browser’s address bar.  If you don’t have one with your current site, you need to get that fixed as soon as possible!).

✅  Conduct regular security audits: They perform regular security audits to identify and address potential vulnerabilities in the website and its infrastructure.

✅  Use a web application firewall (WAF): They implement a WAF to protect against common web-based attacks such as injection attacks and cross-site scripting (XSS).

✅  Use secure file permissions: They properly configure file permissions to prevent unauthorised access to sensitive files and data.

✅  Keep backup copies: They regularly create backups of your website’s files and databases to protect against data loss in case of an attack.

✅  Monitor logs: They regularly monitor the server logs for suspicious activity.

Here at The Online Marketing Surgery we implement all of the above measures as standard.   The web development team ensures they

stay up to date with the current threats and the latest protective countermeasures to combat them.

One of the most effective measures we implement with EVERY site we build is that we put it safely behind something called Cloudflare.

It’s a web security and performance optimisation platform that helps protect and improve a website’s performance.

Cloudflare sits between a website and its visitors, to safely deliver its content and act as a firewall to protect it from any attack.

Question #6 – How do you ensure the website is accessible to visitors?

Web Accessibility refers to the practice of making websites usable for people with disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech,

cognitive, and neurological disabilities.

A website that looks good and reads well to you or I may be a nightmare experience for someone with an impairment.

So it’s important for the information on your site to be as accessible as it possibly can be to ANYONE who might visit your website.  It means

your site will be inclusive to the diverse needs of people who may come to your site for your products and services.

That’s why you have to ask this question.

To make a website accessible, we at The Online Marketing Surgery implement standards and guidelines set by the World Wide Web

Consortium (W3C).  These include:

  • Providing text transcripts for audio and video content.
  • Providing alternative text for images.
  • Using descriptive headings with the right tag hierarchy.
  • Using meaningful and descriptive link text.
  • Implementing easy to use keyboard navigation.
  • Offer adjustable font sizes and colors for better readability.
  • Designing forms that are easily navigable and usable with a keyboard.

We regularly test websites using a variety of accessibility evaluation tools to identify and fix any accessibility issues.

Question #7 – How do you test and validate the website before launch?

Testing and validating a new website before launch is important to ensure that it functions as intended, is user-friendly, and meets both

business and technical requirements.

By thoroughly testing the site, potential issues can be identified and fixed, such as broken links, compatibility issues with different browsers,

and security vulnerabilities. This not only helps to ensure a smooth user experience, but also protects the website from potential harm and

improves its credibility.

Additionally, validating the website’s design and content ensures that it accurately represents the brand and effectively communicates the

intended message to the target audience.

So it’s an important step in the process of successfully launching your site.  How your prospective website developer answers this question

will determine how successful the eventual launch of your site will be.

Here at The Online Marketing Surgery we follow this four stage testing and validation strategy:

Stage 1 – Functional Testing:  As we build out the site we will prove each part of the website design does what it is supposed to do.

Stage 2 – Desktop Approval:  Once the functional part of the site is built and we have made it look good in alignment with your

branding requirements, we’ll present you the desktop version of the site.  Here you’ll be able to test how it works and see what it looks

like.  Only when you’re happy, will we proceed with optimising it for mobile and tablet.

Stage 3 – Mobile/Tablet Validation: With so many different mobile and tablet devices being used, it’s important to get your new site

validated for them all.  We’re able to test your site on any and every mobile device and fix any problems we find.  That way you can

ensure your site will look good on any device a visitor might use to come to your site.

Step 4 – User Acceptability Tests: The final stage of testing comes when we hand over the finished site to you for you to conduct your

own acceptability testing.  You know your business better than anyone and so we’ll encourage and support you to put your new site

through its paces to make sure.

Question #8 – What is your process for troubleshooting and addressing issues post-launch?

Why should you ask this question?

When a developer puts together a website it would be great for it to work perfectly the first time.

Unfortunately that is never the case.  Why?

Well a website is a complex entity requiring thousands of lines of code.

Things are constantly changing online with browser updates, operating system changes and a whole slew of new technologies.

That means there will always be problems to fix when a new site first goes live.   It’s just what happens.

The key thing for you to discover is how your website developer will handle the troubleshooting and address those issues.

What you’re looking for is for them to follow a systematic approach.

It’s the only way to deal with technical issues on this scale.

Here’s how we do it at The Online Marketing Surgery:

We replicate the issue: The first step is to understand the problem by replicating the issue and examining its behavior.

We debug: The next step is to use various debugging tools such as browser developer tools, error logs, and performance monitoring

tools to get more information about the issue.

We identify the root cause: Based on the information we gathered from the debugging process, we identify the cause of the problem.

We fix it: Once the root cause is determined, we apply the fix, we test it and then verify that the issue has been resolved.

We document the solution:  Finally, we document the solution, including any changes made to the code, so that the issue is

understood and similar issues can be easily resolved in the future.

After launching a site we constantly monitor its performance and actively look for potential issues to proactively prevent them from

affecting the user experience.  Staying ahead of the game in this way is better than reacting to problems as they occur.

Question #9 – What kind of support and maintenance do you offer after the website is launched?

Here’s something that’s often overlooked by businesses when they invest in a new website:  things break.

That’s why it’s important for you to have an ongoing support and maintenance arrangement with your developer to ensure your site stays

online and functional.

A good developer will be as focused on looking after a site they have built as they are in building it.

We like to think we’ve set the gold standard for website support and maintenance here at The Online Marketing Surgery, so please use what

we do as a benchmark to assess potential developers.

Here’s what we do:

Technical support:  We provide technical support to address any issues or problems with the website.

Security updates: We regularly update the sites we look after to address security vulnerabilities and protect the website and its users.

Software updates: We keep the site up-to-date with the latest software releases and technology advancements.  This will include WordPress and plugin updates.

Performance optimisation: We optimise the website’s performance to ensure it loads quickly and functions smoothly for users.

Content updates: We can help with updating and maintaining the website’s content, to ensure that it remains accurate and relevant.

Backup and recovery: We provide backup and recovery services to ensure that the site’s data and content can be restored in case of a disaster.

Analytics and reporting: We provide analytics and reporting services to help track the site’s traffic..

By offering this comprehensive support and maintenance, we help ensure that our customer’s website remains functional, secure, and

optimised over time.

Think of it like an insurance policy for your site.

Question #10 – Can you provide examples of similar websites you’ve built for other clients in the past?

They say talk is cheap.

Even if a web developer gives you the right answers to the previous 9 questions, how can you really be sure they’ll still do a good job?

This last question will really help.

Ask to see at least 5 websites they’ve built for other clients…

AND…

…ask to see testimonials.

That way you can see the quality of their work for yourself and get a feel of how they work with their clients.

Here’s just a handful of the many testimonials we’ve had about our website development work:
